Tips for creating a cosy reading corner

Over the years I’ve learned that simple pleasures, like reading a book or running a hot bath, bring great comfort. For as far as I can remember I wanted to create a cosy reading corner in the house and escape the world for a few blissful hours, with only my favourite books for company.

Whether your love for words come in the form of a Kindle or the pages of a book, having a relaxing spot to catch up on your reading will prove to be so rewarding. Setting up a reading corner will serve as a retreat within your home to wind down and relax after a long day of work and a motivation to get started on that pile of books that’s been sitting on your bedside table.

I reserved a corner of my home office to create an inviting reading space, which can double as a great place for answering emails, long phone calls with family and friends or listening to music. There’s nothing more satisfying than curling up on my armchair for a few moments to recharge before returning to work.

Setting up a cozy reading corner

  • The best armchairs for reading are roomy and so comfortable you could easily spend hours in them. You don’t want anything to distract you when reading, especially not uncomfortable back pain or lack of space, right?
Speaking of favourite reading armchairs, how inviting (and seriously stylish I might add) does my DFS & Joules armchair look? I’m big fan of the playful floral print and the delightfully snug velvet fabric.

You might remember that I was invited on a tour of the DFS design studio back in November to preview the Joules collection and learn more about the brand’s history and the craftsmanship that goes into making a piece of furniture.

On the day, we helped to upholster our own armchair (that is not gracing my reading corner) and designed a bespoke cushion. If you have missed the article, you can read a little bit more about the Joules collection, available exclusively at DFS here.

  • Create a hygge haven. From chunky knit cushions and faux fur throws to luxurious sheepskin rugs, all these different textures will add a cosy, snuggle up feel to any reading space.
  • Light candles. A simple flickering candle will create a cosy refuge away from dark winter evenings. Current favourites? Shay & Blue ‘Blood Orange’ and Landon Tyler ‘Citrus Grove’.
  • Invest in a footstool or ottoman to rest your feet on, for many comfortable hours of reading. I’m still searching for one…

I hope these tips will inspire and motivate you to create a cozy space of your own. Happy reading!
