How we decorated our living room (without spending a fortune)

The living room is often the largest room in the house and frequently hosts the most expensive furniture and decorative accessories. If you’ve just moved into a new house like we did, chances are you spent your entire budget on deposit, solicitors and removals company. But don’t let a barely there budget keep you from decorating a house you’ll love living in!

Almost everyone tends to go over their budget when furnishing their house – I strongly suggest to invest in your sofa and rug (if you don’t have carpets) first. A high quality and beautifully designed sofa will give the entire room an expensive feel and transform the space. We fell in love with the ‘Connor’ 3 Seater Velvet Sofa from Made.com and ordered it before we even exchanged contracts (our buying process was quite possibly the smoothest and fastest in the whole history, will talk about this in a different blog post).

One of the things I’ve learned whilst decorating our new house is to measure everything – I tend to get overly excited when I see something I like. Unlike clothes, returning furniture is slightly more difficult as most of them are made to order (something I’ve learned from the DFS team whilst on a press trip at their factory).

We ordered the ‘Connor’ Velvet Armchair to match our sofa, but sadly on delivery we realised is slightly too big for our living room. We’ll probably move it into my office and buy another one in the near future.

If you already have a great sofa, consider investing in a statement piece of furniture that will truly give your space the wow factor. For us, it was the ‘Webster’ Drinks Cabinet from Marks & Spencer – a slightly pricey piece, but nevertheless an investment that will basically last us a lifetime.

Now for the items you can get away with purchasing at a budget price, if you’re looking to cut down the expenses I recommend paying a visit to IKEA as soon as possible. We got our bookcase for only £85 and simply changed the door knobs for a more expensive feel. I can hear the compliments already!

Decorating your living room on a budget doesn’t have to be a challenge. All you need is a little imagination and smart shopping. Oh, and Wayfair! With one of the world’s largest online selections of furniture, home furnishings and decorative items, Wayfair is my one-stop destination for all things home.

After what feels like ages, we finally found a TV stand that’s stylish, practical and fits with the overall aesthetic of our living room. All of that for just under £100! And just when I thought I couldn’t love Wayfair anymore, the brand has launched their mid-season sale making shopping totally guilt-free.

I hope this article helped you get a better idea of how much to expect to spend decorating your living room. And if you need any help or have any questions, don’t hesitate to drop me a line in the comment section below.
